Google releases Android 5.0.1 images for Nexus 5

0 commentaires
Google has released factory images for the latest version of Lollipop for its Nexus 5 smartphone.

Following the rollout of the Android 5.0.1 update for Nexus 7, Nexus 9, and Nexus 10 tablets last week, Google yesterday released factory images for the Nexus 5 too. The update's build number LRX22C is the same as for the other Nexus devices.
Google's strategy for pushing out the update to its own-brand mobile devices appears to be somewhat scattershot: while 5.0.1 has been made available for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 6, users of the 2012 and 2013 editions are still waiting for the latest edition of Lollipop to hit their devices.
Google hasn't disclosed what new changes the update brings to Lollipop. However, Funky Android has published a log of the changes included in the Android Open Source Project - that is, the changes in 5.0.1 before Google tweaked it for different devices.
Device owners can install the updates themselves based on Google's 5.0.1 binaries or simply wait a few days for the 'over the air' update to arrive on their devices. The fact that the Nexus 5 binaries are already in the wild means the wait for OTA updates shouldn't be long. US carrier Sprint said on Monday it would release LRX22C soon but its support pages only state that it will include "miscellaneous Android updates".
One would hope that Google has fixed the more dramatic issues some users have reported following the 5.0 release this November, such as accidentally factory resetting a device configured to wipe itself after a number of failed access attempts. Other apparently widespread problems with 5.0 on various Nexus devices included wi-fi connectivity glitches and issues with making calls.
Android Lollipop has been praised for both delivering enterprise-friendly security improvements and making WebView much simpler to fix when bugs are found.
The Nexus 6 was released with full disk encryption on by default. However, tests done by AnandTechindicate that this feature comes with a significant performance overhead. Users on older Nexus devices still have to enable disk encryption when they upgrade to Lollipop if they want the additional layer of security.

Pirate Bay team talk seizure, scams, future plans

the pirat bay
Last week, the once-dominant torrent search website The Pirate Bay was closed down as police enforcement officers raided a data center in Sweden, confiscating backbone equipment and servers.
Considering the website has only ever seen outages lasting no more than three days since launch, over a week has left users concerned.
The question on many lips is simple: whether The Pirate Bay will make a comeback on its own steam, or whether other organizations will chip in to keep torrents flowing.
Speaking to TorrentFreak, The Pirate Bay's crew admitted there were no concrete plans to resurrect the website, but has encouraged the general public to keep the torrent site's spirit alive.
One such member, known only as "Mr 10100100000," said the team "were not that surprised by the raid," as it is "part of this game." Interestingly, the TPB crew member also said the team "couldn't care less really."

"We have however taken this opportunity to give ourselves a break," Mr 10100100000 said. "How long are we supposed to keep going? To what end? We were a bit curious to see how the public would react. Will we reboot? We don't know yet. But if and when we do, it'll be with a bang."
The Pirate Bay has gained enough notoriety as a place to find .torrent links for both illegal and legal content to see it banned in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom. However, while ISPs have bowed to court demands to restrict access, proxies prove an easy way to circumvent these rulings. The seizure of The Pirate Bay gave rise to a number of proxy services for alternatives, as well as "copies" of the original site which are slowly adding new content.
One such copy, developed by Isohunt, appears to have a number of working links and torrents from the original Pirate Bay database.
However, the closure of The Pirate Bay has also given scammers the opportunity to cash in. Some 'copies' on the Web lead only to malicious web pages or fake results.
"Of course there is a problem if sites like [thepiratebay].ee try to scam people. But overall, we'd love to see a thousand Pirate Bays," Mr 10100100000 told the publication.
The future isn't certain for the website and loyal community which has grown around it, but we aren't likely to see the website's image disappear from the Web any time soon. According to The Pirate Bay crew member, talks are going on behind the scenes on how best to proceed.
"The people behind TPB are like one big collective mind," Mr 10100100000 said. "There are no leaders nor anyone in charge. About 30--50 people from all over the world pitch their ideas against each other and whatever comes out of that is what will be the fate of TPB."

Microsoft update blunders going out of control

Microsoft update blunders going out of control
The last several months have seen a disturbing string of problems in updates released for Microsoft products. Last week we saw
three four. It's time to worry about what's behind it all.e
This isn't the first time I've brought this up. In Summer of last year Microsoft had buggy Patch Tuesday updates three months in a row. There had been others that year, some of which crippled systems.
The following list includes problems observed in just the last six months:
  • Microsoft's June patches broke Office Click-to-Run for some
  • August Windows updates cause systems to go into reboot loops (among other problems)
  • September Lync server security update may not install successfully
  • A file synch issue in OneDrive for Business force Microsoft to pull and reissue an update
  • An update to add SHA-2 hashing to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 could cause system reboots
  • New ciphers included with a security update to Schannel caused connections to drop and programs to become unresponsive
  • October updates to Microsoft Word 2010 and 2013 could stop fields from updating (*)
  • An Exchange 2010 update issued in December could stop Outlook from connecting to the server. It was withdrawn and reissued
  • December update KB3004394 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 can cause an inability to install future updates
  • December update KB2553154 for Office 2010 disables ActiveX controls
Update on December 15: They keep coming. KB3008923 describes problems with MS14-080, the December Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer:
Known issues with this security update
  • We are aware of some reports of functional issues on sites that use nested modal dialog boxes on Internet Explorer 11 that occur after you install this security update. Microsoft is researching this issue and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.
  • We are aware of some limited reports of Internet Explorer 9 crashing after you apply this security update. Microsoft is researching this issue and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.
The MS14-080 security bulletin itself has no mention of any problems.
Note the (*) on the link about the October updates to Word. In Microsoft's explanations of what caused this update I saw inconsistencies and things that just didn't make sense. Sorry, it's complicated:
  • According to an Office Sustained Engineering blog announcing the issue, both Word 2010 and Word 2013 suffer from the same problem caused by the October public updates. It refers the user to two different KBs: KB2920738 for Word 2013, KB2920807 for Word 2010.
  • According to KB2920738, the Word 2013 problem requires "that you installed October hotfixKB2889939 for Word 2013."
  • KB2920807 does not say whether a particular update/hotfix causes the problem in Word 2010.
  • The purpose of KB2889939, the October update which (according to KB2920738) causes the problem in Word 2013, is that it "[I]mproves localization in the Kyrgyz and Mongolian language versions to make sure that the meanings are accurate." It's just my opinion, but I think that such an update sounds unlikely to have caused the problem described in Word (fields not updating some times)
  • There is no update listed for Word 2010 that corresponds to KB2889939 for Word 2013

microsoft-newlogo.jpg
If you're lost, I'm sorry but not surprised. It's convoluted. It's also strangely reminiscent of the problems with the August patches that caused systems to go into infinite reboot loops. The update for which this problem was blamed is KB2970228"Update to support the new currency symbol for the Russian ruble in Windows." I just don't see how such an update could cause such a problem.
Whenever I see a change like this in anything I try to ask myself if there really is a change or if we're just noticing it more than in the past. In this case, I think the only way it's only a matter of perception is if Microsoft has begun reporting update problems more than they have in the past. This is entirely possible, but I don't have any real evidence that it's the case.
With products as complex as Windows, Office and Exchange and a user base as large and diverse as theirs, there are always people complaining of problems caused by updates and it's inevitable that some users will suffer ill effects from even a well-designed and tested patch, because there are just too many configurations and third-party products for Microsoft to test.
There's another complication potentially at fault in these bugs: Microsoft silently patches many security problems. Who knows, perhaps the Kyrgyz/Mongolian and Ruble updates did a lot more than Microsoft claimed they did. If an undocumented function of an update were to cause problems it wouldn't be surprising for Microsoft to dissemble in their explanations. Of course I'm speculating here, but it's not like we have an official and logical explanation on which to rely.
I would assume that the people in charge at Microsoft know what the real problem is and aren't happy with it. In the long run, when almost all our software is in the cloud and managed, I think all patches will be silent and we won't know anything happened, other than perhaps a version number incrementing. Have there been any security bulletins for the online parts of Office 365?
In the meantime I have to figure that the update processes for Windows, Office and Exchange have become too complex and unwieldy. There's little Microsoft can do about it in the short term; they brought it on themselves, mostly by having excessively long support lifecycles. I wish I had some constructive advice with near-term benefits, but I think we're doomed to more of this sort of thing for the foreseeable future.

U.S. security contractor vetting firm hit by breaches

A contractor for U.S. Homeland Security suffered a data breach, leading to the leak of personal information on employees. The private company, USIS, conducts background checks on behalf of the government agency. USIS came under fire for being the firm that vetted Edward Snowden. The U.S. Justice Dept. also accused the company of faking more than half-a-million background checks.

How to Find and Remove Duplicate Files on Windows

0 commentaires

find duplicate files on windows 8
Duplicate files waste precious space on your computer’s hard drive — especially if you have anSSD — and make your computer’s backups bigger for no good reason. Here’s how you can free up some disk space.
Every program we recommend here comes with a clean installer that won’t try to install toolbars and other junkware on your system. We hate that, too, so we spent time finding the good programs.

dupeGuru, dupeGuru Music Edition, and dupeGuru Pictures Edition

dupeGuru is a great application for this. It’s completely free and comes in three flavors: dupeGuru, dupeGuru Music Edition, and dupeGuru Pictures Edition. The music and pictures editions are specialized for finding similar music files and pictures. For example, the music edition will find the same song, even if they’re in different MP3 files encoded at different bitrates. Or the pictures edition will find copies of the same photo even if they’ve been resized, rotated, or slightly edited. This utility uses a “fuzzy match” algorithm and can find files that are very similar and not just completely identical.
dupeGuru is completely open-source. The installer won’t attempt to drag any toolbars or other junk onto your system, and it isn’t even trying to upsell you to anything.
The interface is simple, but easy to use — open it, add a few folders or drives you want to scan, and click Scan. You’ll see a list of duplicate files, and you can easily select and delete the files you want to remove. Double-click a file in the list to open and examine it.

DigitalVolcano’s Duplicate Cleaner Free

Note: use the “non-CNET” download link.
Digital Volcano’s Duplicate Cleaner is another good option. They sell a paid version of this application, but the free version provides the basic duplicate-scanning features with a nice interface. The installer redirects you through Download.com, but it didn’t try to install any junkware on our system when we installed it. DigitalVolcano is trying to make money the old-fashioned way — by providing a good product and hoping people buy the upgraded paid version with more features.
Duplicate Cleaner provides a pretty interface that will scan your computer and any connected external drives for duplicate files. The pro version also scans for very-similar images and music files that are slightly different, but the free version has the basic duplicate-file-finding features.
This application’s advantage over dupeGuru is its prettier interface. It holds your hand a bit more than dupeGuru does.

VisiPics

Use VisiPics to scan for image files that are very similar, even if they aren’t completely identical. For example, VisiPics will find resized, rotated, edited, and otherwise-modified image files and flag them as duplicates. You may not need these multiple similar copies of photos and other images, so VisiPics can help you here.
dupeGuru and other duplicate-file-removing applications can also do this, but VisiPics has an interface designed with photos in mind. If you have a large collection of digital photos, VisiPics is probably the application to use. It will provide a more visual interface for looking at those photos and clearing our your duplicates.
VisiPics is free — donationware, technically — and won’t try to install any junk on your system. Read our guide to cleaning up your duplicate photos with VisiPics for more instructions.

Duplicate File Finder

Duplicate File Finder is another barebones-yet-functional open-source application with a no-frills interface. It actually has a different approach from other applications. It looks for files that have the exact same size and only then compares them to see if they’re duplicates of each other.
This means you won’t get the almost-but-not-quite-exact matching features other applications provide. However, it also means that Duplicate File Finder should be even faster at scanning through a larger set of files. if you only care about files that are completely identical and not just almost identical, you can save time with Duplicate File Finder. It doesn’t have the prettiest interface, but it definitely works.

This isn’t a complete list of all the duplicate-file-finding utilities for Windows out there. There are many other ones, often with installers packed full of junkware and toolbars. The above utilities should do the job without messing with your system or demanding money.
Remember, don’t delete duplicate files in system folders — for example, under C:\Program Files or C:\Windows. Programs may depend on having duplicate copies of certain files in specific places. Leave system files alone and only clean up your own personal data files — documents, images, music files, videos, and everything else you might have a duplicate copy of.
